February 2010

You are currently browsing the monthly archive for February 2010.

In March we started a new department called Design Dossier and I (like Heather’s post last week) am loving it! Each month it is about an Atlanta tastemaker’s favorite things and Amy Morris, our first “contestant,” definitely set the standard high!
I’ve always enjoyed a good game of categories, so I decided it would be fun to focus on staff favorites every Friday. This week, it’s all about our favorite music of the moment:

1. Clinton Smith – Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix by Phoenix
2. Rachel Cardina Lasserre – For Emma, Forever Ago by Bon Iver
3. Kate Abney – I and Love and You by The Avett Brothers
4. Heather J. Paper – The Essential Leonard Cohen by Leonard Cohen

What albums are you listening to at the moment? Let us know!

You may have seen our earlier post this week on kitchens, and white kitchens are among those showcased, a look that many people prefer these days. That’s why this renovated home at 651 Cumberland Road N.E. in Morningside caught our eye, with its white cabinets, double honed Calacatta Carrara marble countertops and a breakfast bar that opens to the family room.

Those features, along with the stainless steel appliances that include a Wolf range, add to a clean and bright feel in the four-bedroom, three-bath home listed for $875,000 by Carrie Anne Rillo with Dorsey-Alston Realtors.

The home, which was built in 1930, also has been updated with Waterworks fixtures in the master bath and a new two-car garage, definitely a plus for those seeking an intown address.

It’s open from 3-5 p.m. Sunday, and if you get to go, take some time to relax on the screened porch, which has a fireplace, too.

Last evening, a small group gathered at the Midtown home of artists Richard Mafong and Jon Eric Riis to unveil the magnificent woven metallic silk and black fresh water pearl tapestry that Riis is generously donating to the High Museum Atlanta Wine Auction on March 27. The piece is called “Tiger Banner” and (we’re just showing a snippet here) hangs vertically as a 12″ x 66″ museum-quality masterpiece. We were all invited to the basement studio where the most amazing and unique  tapestries, coats and other pieces are created. I can’t even fathom the amount of hours it takes for just one piece.

Tiger Banner

This art is genius. No wonder his pieces are all over the world in private collections, traveling exhibits and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NY, Art Institute of Chicago, Minneapolis Institute of Art, Cleveland Museum of Art, New York Museum of Arts and Design, Smithsonian American Art Museum, The Renwick Gallery, and countless others, including the High Museum of Art, of course. Jon and Richard are world-renowned artists, and world-class gentlemen. How lucky we are to have them in Atlanta.

Mastering the mix

I’ve always admired those who can tastefully mix bold colors and patterns. Yellow and green are my favorite colors, but I can never quite figure out how to spotlight them in my room. Perhaps I should take notes from the homeowner of this charming abode featured on Design*Sponge.

This antique card catalouge really pops against the two-toned wall.

There are so many colors and patterns in this room, but I love how they’re not fighting eachother—they’re in perfect harmony.

The wallpaper in this desk nook beautifully complements the yellow wall.

There’s not one room in this home that’s not a fun, quirky visual feast!
Check out the rest of it here.

Is it just me? Or has anyone else noticed that birds are flocking to home furnishings in record numbers? Not that they haven’t been around for years, but this season the trend really seems to be taking flight. From Jonathan Adler’s bird bottle stoppers and owl napkin rings to Suzanne Kasler’s Song Birds collection of wall art for Soicher Marin, fine feathered friends are everywhere. And nowhere more so than in this season’s fabrics. These two examples from Duralee and Clarence House prove the point beautifully: Whether you prefer a traditional tack or want to infuse a touch of whimsey, there’s a bird-bedecked fabric sure to suit your style.
