I’ll admit it: I spend more than a fair share of every day reading design blogs. I hate to confess just how many I’ve bookmarked; let’s just say it’s more than 5 and less than 500. Yesterday, one of my favorites–Decor8–posted some Rosehip pillowcases that are perfect for my severe case of spring fever. I love these on so many levels. They’re feminine, fresh and so uplifting! Plus, they remind me of all my favorite springtime flowers–peonies, bluebells, lily-of-the-valley. Most of all, though, they’re reminiscent of the crochet-trimmed pieces that were piled high in my grandmother’s linen closet. I find myself wishing I’d paid more attention when she tried to teach me this needlecraft. No doubt she’d have been proud if I could have turned out work like this.

My husband tells me that he can read me like a book. If he comes home and finds me standing in the middle of a room with my finger on my cheek, he knows we’ll be rearranging furniture before dinner. On the other hand, if he finds me tapping my finger on my cheek, we’ll be buying new furniture before dinner.

Tonight–or at least sometime soon–I think he’ll find me tapping that telltale finger. I’ve been searching for the perfect chair for my living room and have finally narrowed it down to a select few. First up, these Louis XVI chairs from a recent Margaret Bosbyshell project; upholstered in black leather and accented with embroidered fabric, they take on a certain modern glam.

Or I could just as easily go with this pair of spring green wingbacks from the same project. I love how the color alone gives the traditional frames a fresh new vibe!

Or maybe it’s not a chair at all I’m looking for but, instead, a more unexpected settee. Barbara Howard recently fashioned this one for a client and I’m crazy about the zig-zag pattern!

Although I haven’t made any final decision, one thing is abundantly clear: The perfect piece will have some kind of traditional silhouette with a decidedly up-to-date covering.
What do you think? Any others you think I should be considering?

As I looked out my window yesterday, watching yet another round of snow blanket the neighborhood, I couldn’t help thinking how it was so attuned to my own decorating preferences. Though you won’t find an all-white room in my house, I’m invariably drawn to all-white furnishings. I find that a single piece in an otherwise color-splashed space is often the perfect foil.

Happily, it seems I’m not alone in my penchant; I’m seeing all-white pieces at practically every turn, including a few of my current favorites below from Baker, Haute House and–right here in Buckhead–a favorite go-to spot, Pieces. Best of all, these designs aren’t as seasonal as the white stuff outside my front door. They’re a perfect fit any time of year.

Is it just me? Or has anyone else noticed that birds are flocking to home furnishings in record numbers? Not that they haven’t been around for years, but this season the trend really seems to be taking flight. From Jonathan Adler‘s bird bottle stoppers and owl napkin rings to Suzanne Kasler‘s Song Birds collection of wall art for Soicher Marin, fine feathered friends are everywhere. And nowhere more so than in this season’s fabrics. These two examples from Duralee and Clarence House prove the point beautifully: Whether you prefer a traditional tack or want to infuse a touch of whimsey, there’s a bird-bedecked fabric sure to suit your style.

Fashion-minded Bob Brown used an Hermes-orange table in this dining room/library.

In his Alys Beach home, Bill Musso used Bauhaus-style arc lamps in a refreshing lime green.

In the March issue of AH&L, we introduced a new series–Design Dossier. Each installment focuses on a local tastemaker, sort of an everything-you-ever-wanted-to-know kind of piece. Amy Morris was our first subject (I was fascinated, for instance, to learn that she and I share a favorite wine!) and you won’t want to miss the ones coming up. But as I read Amy’s piece–in which she divulges everything from her favorite shopping spots to her must-have home accessories–I found myself answering the same questions we’d put to her.

For instance, Amy told us that “Every home needs…good window treatments.” If that same question were put to me, I’d say “Every home needs…an unexpected splash of color.” Two picture-perfect examples from our archives are the dining room/library in this Bob Brown-designed residence and a guest room in Bill Musso’s Alys Beach home. Both incorporate bold color which, to my way of thinking, ups the design ante several fold.

So, just one question remains: What do you think every home needs?
