Kitchen Redux

This month’s annual kitchen issue has me thinking of my favorite kitchens that have previously graced the pages of AH&L. Here are a few:


I could bake for hours in this classic white kitchen by Summerour Interiors.


Featured in our 2008 Lake Keowee Showhouse, this “non-kitchen kitchen” blends seamlessly into the combination living/dining room.


This beauty by Beth Webb is the epitome of country chic.


John Oetgen takes a bold approach in this vacation home nestled in the Blue Ridge mountains.


Kitchen guru Matthew Quinn used a striated marble for this cool and contemporary island design.


I’ve always admired this kitchen by Sara Steinfeld, who makes traditional walnut look positively sleek in this stainless steel-clad space.

Love this calendar’s whimsical watercolor wash by Chelsea Petaja. It proudly hangs on my inspiration board at home.


Rifle Paper Co. never disappoints with its hand-painted prints.


I’m a sucker for anything with a chevron print and was immediately smitten when I came across this collection on Etsy by Jen Owens, who provides a color swatch that lets you customize every month.

One Kings Lane Design Bloggers Scholarship

Aspiring design bloggers: here’s your chance to take your work to the next level. One Kings Lane is offering scholarships to five worthy bloggers, sending you to the The Design Bloggers Conference at the Millennium Biltmore in LA February 26-28, 2012. Last year, the sold-out conference was THE place to network and learn more about the design blogosphere, so check out the details and apply!

The Rules:

  • Application deadline: November 15, 2011
  • Design Bloggers who have been regularly posting for six months or more are eligible
  • Applicants are asked to describe their blog, their financial need pertaining to the conference, and why they are deserving of sponsorship
  • The scholarships will be awarded through a committee selection process based on the above mentioned focus criteria
  • Winners of the scholarship will receive a free conference pass
  • Winners will be announced on December 1, 2011
  • The winners will also be invited to submit a guest blog to appear on the Design Bloggers Conference website profiling how they got started, their blog, and their aspirations
  • Entries should be sent via email to scholarship@design-bloggers-conference.com

Crowning Jewel: A classic accessory gives baths a new dimension

This week is AH&L’s annual contest judging for the “Bath of the Year” competition. With this year’s record number of entries I’m excited to see what emerging trends entrants have incorporated into their designs. But I’m also hoping that my favorite classic oversized accessory—a towering floor mirror—has made it into a few of the baths. Especially if it’s placed behind a dreamy bathtub. swoon. Here are a few of my favorite examples…

All of the mirrors serve as stunning focal points, but beyond just their beauty, large mirrors in typically smaller spaces such as baths can visually expand the area. Another thing to note in first two pictures is the use of furniture that looks like it’s been lifted from a bedroom or living room, bringing with it a sense of warmth and coziness.

Culinary Couture: cakes and cookies with high style
