Friday Favorites: Artist
April 1, 2010 in Editor Picks by Rachel | 1 comment
Finding a good-looking stamp is sometimes tough, right? I don’t know about you, but it just makes me cringe when I have gone through a lot of hard work to make a cute thank you card and then have to stamp it with Bart from The Simpsons. However, the U.S. Postal Service has been on a roll the last few years. I loved the Charles and Ray Eames stamps it released in 2008 and The Quilts of Gee’s Bend collection in 2006. Oh, and I must not forget the King and Queen of Hearts stamps that came available the week I sent out my wedding invitations last spring! In addition to all these beauties, the Postal Service just issued 10 new designs that celebrate the abstract expressionist artists of the 20th Century, including all my favorites: Mark Rothko, Jackson Pollock, Barnett Newman and Robert Motherwell.
Which brings me to our next Friday favorites… our favorite artists. I know it is tough to narrow down to just one, but let us know which artist you are crazy about right now! And if you happen to like abstract expressionists, don’t forget to order a few stamps here!

1. Clinton Smith – I’m a sucker for works on paper. One of my favorite artists at the moment is Ben Berlow. I recently bought a piece of his from Callicoon Fine Arts in New York and I love it. Now, I just have to have it framed!
2. Sejal Bhima – Picasso
3. Eric Ashley – Rembrandt
4. Heather J. Paper – It’s so hard to pick one favorite artist! For glass it’s Dale Chihuly, sculpture is Deborah Butterfield and painters depends on my mood. I’m more drawn to American artists so, for today, I will have to say Jasper Johns.

You have all selected terrific artists. My pick is a contemporary American artist who does wood engravings, Barry Moser. Wonderful black and white prints.
