Tastemakers Help Haiti
The devastation caused by the recent earthquake in Haiti may have caused immeasurable damage to a nation, but thankfully, it has also encouraged aid from so many generous people in the U.S. and abroad. Here are just a few stylish events we’ve uncovered in Atlanta that offer you a fun way to get involved and raise money for this deserving cause:
Stop in at the new Midtown lounge Aurum—designed by local design luminary Michael Habachy—on Saturday, January 23 from 6 to 9 p.m. for a fundraising drive replete with tasty appetizers and industry faces. Food will be provided by restaurants such as Silk, Pacific Grill, Hsu’s, Alon’s Shaun’s and Loca Luna, while raffle prizes from local businesses OwenLawrence, Blue MedSpa, Spice Market, The W Midtown, MetroFresh, Shaun’s Edgewood Social Club, Lupe Taqueria, Top Flr, Alon’s, P’cheen International Bistro & Pub, James Madison Salon, Habachy Designs and mcuh more will be up for grabs. Your in-kind donation, which will go toward your choice of three charities—CARE International, Partners in Health, and Save the Children—is your ticket in.
At the Environment Furniture showroom on the Westside, all sales of BRANDAID artwork will go toward Haitian relief efforts. Prices for the works, which feature the art of local Haitan artisans, start at $120. This promotion also applies to Environment’s New York, Los Angeles and Costa Mesa showrooms.
Andy Alibaksh and Arnaud Michele, owners of the Amuse!, Anise, Café Diem, Après Diem, Carpe Diem, Village Plaza and Carroll Street Café family of restaurants, are hosting a special dine-out event to aid the Haitian relief efforts. On Tuesday, January 26, 20 percent of all purchases on your bill at these participating restaurants will go toward Doctors Without Borders, currently aiding Haitian disaster survivors. Visit the link to the event on Facebook to make your R.S.V.P. official.
Visit Emily Amy Gallery on the Westside for the Aide Haiti for a cocktail fundraiser on Friday, January 29 from 8 p.m. to 12 a.m. Proceeds from this auction of art and exclusive items from local businesses will go to Care.org and Habitat for Humanity, both providing immediate and long-term relief to the people of Haiti.

Here’s an exclusive we couldn’t be more excited about:

Sweet Dreams

This afternoon, I received a press release from the Specialty Sleep Association (who knew there was such a group?!). I thought it was very informative, so here it is:

With the Specialty Sleep Association projecting growth for 2010 (after two years of the worst sales in four decades) — bedding makers are gearing up to unveil new trends and the most creative lines at the February 1-3 Las Vegas Furniture Market, the leading national bedding show of the year. Here’s a preview of the newest trends/products to be launched at Las Vegas, including:

· A ‘multi-Sensory’ Sleep Mattresses will now come in a slew of colors & patterns and are even infused with soothing scents (like lavender and chamomile) and essential oils to engage all the senses

· ‘Luxe Living’ – Hand tufted, hand-sewn mattresses crafted of the most luxurious and rare materials will be cropping up at upscale shops.

· ‘Even Greener’ – Joma wool, bamboo, shredded natural rubber, buckwheat, even green tea!  — unusual, all-natural materials are key ingredients in green bedding products

· Double-Duty Designs – from stylish new takes on the traditional futon to beds and couches with muliti-functional appeal, double-duty, space-saving designs is a leading trend for 2010

· ‘The Look for Less’ – high-tech extras and luxe designs can now also be had with some new, lower priced lines (including beds with retractable TV’s, massage programs & more – at a fraction of the price)

Hop Local Galleries for Free TONIGHT

carpet-detail-1

Gallery Hops at SCAD Atlanta are free and open to the public, allowing you to view many of SCAD’s groundbreaking exhibits at no cost–even a free shuttle to the galleries and parking services are available at the SCAD Atlanta campus. Fortunately, one of these seasonal events lined up for this evening—with refreshments served at select galleries. Details below:
The ACA Gallery of SCAD Atlanta welcomes the work of Cao Fei (a Chinese artist currently shortlisted for the Guggenheim Foundation’s Hugo Boss Prise) presents “NO LAB on Tour” in partnership with Map Office, a Hong Kong-based husband-and-wife duo, who show dynamic and politically charged films and line drawings depicting a Katrina-battered New Orleans. Joining the exhibit is a carnival cart with computers linked to another of this artist’s projects, Second Life. Viewers can use the software to create their own avatar and navigate the virtual world created by this digital architect. The exhibits continue through February 7 but are on view for free tonight from 6 to 8 p.m. Woodruff Arts Center, 1280 Peachtree St.
Swing by Trois Gallery for Erick Swenson’s moving “Caught Captive” exhibition of naturalistic cast resin sculptures depicting allegorical, hybrid creatures frozen in dramatic moments of tension. His Whitney Museum-exhibited “Carpet Piece”—an intricatedly painted fiberglass sculpture desined to look like a woven carpet–is also on view. This exhibit continues through January 24 but is on view for free tonight from 6 to 8 p.m. SCAD Atlanta, 1600 Peachtree St.
Head to Gallery See at 3:30 p.m. for a gallery talk by the creators of “Horsepower”—a two-person painting exhibition by SCAD Savannah professor Gregory Eltringham and SCAD’s 2009 Visiting Artist Matt Blackwell. From cruiser cars to equine imagery, the works play off the double meaning of the title word and pay homage to a nostalgic American past. This exhibit continues through February 26 but is on view for free tonight from 6 to 8 p.m. Visit at 3:30 p.m. for the artists’ talk. SCAD Atlanta, 1600 Peachtree St.

AmericasMart Adventure

On Friday, I attended the Atlanta International Gift and Home Furnishings Market. That’s where shop owners from around the globe go to buy things for their stores and showrooms, and it’s great place to see upcoming trends for summer and even fall. One of the best things about Market is getting to see and meet the guest speakers who attend. I really enjoyed hearing New York Designer Brad Ford speak about his design work, as well as his own blog, Design Therapy. If you aren’t familiar with his blog or his work, check out his Web sites! I first saw his design work in person this summer when I attended the Hampton Designer Showhouse. Ford had designed a room there and it was my favorite. (I want those sconces…and that rope mirror!)

Throughout the day, I ran into numerous folks from the Atlanta design community, including designers Valerie DeRoy, Bill Peace, Bob Brown, Matthew Quinn, Dixie Peoples, as well as shop owners Barbara Heath of The Mercantile, Bill Hudgins of Lush Life and Nancy Duffey of Scout. I can’t wait to see what they buy for their shops and clients!
