All 16 of the townhomes for auction at The Peninsula at Lake Oconee went to the highest bidders at the December event, averaging $400,000 per unit, says Craig Post, the Chicago-based managing director of auction firm Sheldon Good & Co. Sales totaled $6.5 million.
The closings on the four- and five-bedroom townhomes are expected in the next seven to 10 days, and Post reports that the majority of buyers were from Atlanta. He won’t disclose the number of bidders, but says the auction had a strong turnout, with 200 attendees including bidders from New York, South Carolina and northern Florida.
The auctioned townhomes represented nearly half of the units in the lakefront 36-unit community in Eatonton.
Post says: “This was a secondary home community where a majority of the auctions (Sheldon Good conducts) are for primary residents. I think what’s most important is that the auction was able to demonstrate market value and that also garnered the attention of the maketplace. It enticed people to make a discrentionary purchase.”
No more Georgia auctions are scheduled for now, but Post expects the company will be doing more auctions here this spring and summer.
