Last week on Wednesday, February 16, I had the pleasure of attending the sixth-annual International Design Association (IIDA), Georgia Chapter Best of the Best (b.o.b.) Forum Design Awards, held at Opera nightclub in Midtown. And, I must say, this was one of the biggest, most fabulous productions I’ve been to in the city yet. Each year, the theme revolves around a different decade, and this year paid tribute to the groovy ’70s. Approximately 400 folks from Atlanta’s design industries were in attendance, festively dolled up in their most fabulous Pucci prints, Go-Go boots, afro wigs and bell-bottom pants. We all feasted on tons of delicious food and libations, with complimentary desserts at our table—quite a treat! The Design Forum Awards—which encompassed winnings for historic preservation, residential, sustainability, retail, government and more—were presented by big names in the Atlanta design community, including Herman Miller, 3form, Tandus, Shaw, Maharam and CWC, with big winners like Insight Design, TVS Design and Perkins + Will (who also took home the “best of the best” designation). And in keeping with its true award show pomp, this event featured a short film series in between award presentations, “Bob’s Angels,” playing off the “best of the best” moniker. What a fantastic occasion! As you can see below, everyone had a blast. All photographs of the fête were taken by John Clemmer of John Clemer Photography.

Before working at our wonderful magazine, I didn’t really understand my design aesthetic. I had pretty much just graduated from UGA, where futons and Georgia paraphernalia (Go Dawgs!) were the standard design ingredients of college apartments. But after a year-and-a-half here, I’ve finally determined my style is “feminine chic.” I’ve constantly found myself drawn to cozy, romantic rooms that feature restrained color palettes, sumptuous fabrics and soft lighting.

Phoebe Howard’s guest bedroom in the 2008 Christmas House is the epitome of serene femininity.

InStyle Home featured this stunning SoHo loft three years ago. I’ve been hanging on to the magazine in hopes of re-creating this look in my own home someday.

This charming bedroom was featured in Country Living.

On Friday, I attended the Atlanta International Gift and Home Furnishings Market. That’s where shop owners from around the globe go to buy things for their stores and showrooms, and it’s great place to see upcoming trends for summer and even fall. One of the best things about Market is getting to see and meet the guest speakers who attend. I really enjoyed hearing New York Designer Brad Ford speak about his design work, as well as his own blog, Design Therapy. If you aren’t familiar with his blog or his work, check out his Web sites! I first saw his design work in person this summer when I attended the Hampton Designer Showhouse. Ford had designed a room there and it was my favorite. (I want those sconces…and that rope mirror!)
Throughout the day, I ran into numerous folks from the Atlanta design community, including designers Valerie DeRoy, Bill Peace, Bob Brown, Matthew Quinn, Dixie Peoples, as well as shop owners Barbara Heath of The Mercantile, Bill Hudgins of Lush Life and Nancy Duffey of Scout. I can’t wait to see what they buy for their shops and clients!
