The home at 205 West Paces Ferry Road, listed for $4.65 million, has three reasons why some folks may want to check it out.

1. It’s on this Sunday’s Buckhead in Bloom event, the Atlanta Preservation Center’s annual tour of homes. And it’s an appropriate spot, with the home on 2 acres and featuring a courtyard, garden, gazebo with granite countertops, an outdoor fireplace, and a saltwater pool and Jacuzzi. You can purchase tickets in advance at the Cathedral of St. Philip Book Store, Boxwoods Gardens and Gifts and The Swan Coach House, on at the home on the day of the tour (tickets are $40 for non-APC members, $30 for members).

2. It’s Philip Trammell Shutze original, built in 1936 and renovated and expanded to about 10,000 square feet four years ago by Harrison Design Associates. The front of the home was designed in the English Regency style; the back is the American Federal style.

3. It’s a bank-owned property, joining others of all price ranges in foreclosure on the market in Atlanta.

The seven-bedroom, 7 ½-bath home, known as The Thornton-Jones House, is listed by Russell A. Gray with Harry Norman, Realtors. There’s ample space for extras like a gym, steam, sauna and a massage room, which has one of the home’s eight fireplaces.

Don’t exert yourself too much this Sunday, though, and enjoy visiting a landmark that’s on the market.

As a mom of a 4-year-old, I know the challenges of trying to containing toys in a home and I’m always on the lookout for well-designed homes on the market with space for kids that don’t take away from the style of the home. Think the opposite of the home in the ABC show “The Middle” and more like the homes on the set of “Desperate Housewives.”

That’s why this traditional three-bedroom, three-bath Brookhaven home at 984 Stovall Blvd. N.E., priced for $1.3 million and listed with Julene Hodges of Harry Norman, Realtors, stands out with its kid-friendly details. And unlike some homes, it doesn’t assume that the only kid space should be in the basement, which can make it difficult as a parent to watch them and get other things done.

The bright sunroom is devoted to a kids’ playroom, with plenty of seating and the white walls serving as a backdrop to display artwork. And best of all, it can be closed off with French doors from the rest of the house, which you can see during an open house from 3-5 p.m. Sunday.

Outside, there’s a brick patio and playground space, and the home also has a separate cabin with a stone fireplace. Inside the main home, built in 1940, the living spaces include details such as built-in bookcases, which also appear in the cabin. Just the right balance, in my mind, of adult and kid space.

150 Blackland

This McAlpine Tankersley-designed home built in 2005 that’s a favorite of the Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles staff is on the market for $6.3 million.

The slate roof topped with a working clock makes the home at 150 Blackland Road stand out among other Buckhead residences, with its amazing entryway distinguished by three sets of front doors and a motor court with two carriage houses.150 Blackland exterior

With seven bedrooms, seven full and two half baths, the home was completed by Stan Benecki in 2005, and its architecture has been described as European, with a South African influence, says agent Carol Ann Loyd with Harry Norman, Realtors. Owners Alan and Chi Colberg (managing director of the Atlanta office of consulting firm Bain & Co. and chairman of the Atlanta International School Board of Trustees) have often entertained large groups in the home, which is located near the corner of Tuxedo Road.

The lot isn’t skimpy – 2.35 acres landscaped by Ed Castro, who created a Japanese garden and several perennial gardens. A slate patio and a Pebble Tec pool are among the numerous areas for outdoor entertaining – there’s also an outdoor kitchen, screened-in porch and an open air pavilion.

If you get to look inside, the home has open flow and unexpected details like antique wooden beams in rooms such as the kitchen. If you can’t, look to see a collection of the Montgomery, Ala.-based architecture firm’s idyllic homes that blend nostalgia and history with modern living when “The Home Within Us: The Romantic Houses of McAlpine Tankersley Architecture,” by Bobby McAlpine comes out this spring.

1418 North Morningside kitchen

Who wouldn’t want to cook a holiday dinner or party hors d’oeuvres in this kitchen? The long island in this new home at 1418 North Morningside adds plenty of space for those activities and relaxing with guests the morning after. It’s described in the listing as a “pastry island” and makes me just want to whip out some flour and get to work on a dessert.

The kitchen is just one of the spacious features in the four-level home, which is listed for $1.595 million by Donna Boynton and Joy Myrick with Harry Norman, Realtors. The home, which replaced a teardown, is perched high on the street and blends nicely into the neighborhood.1418 North Morningside exterior

You’ll find 5 bedrooms, 5 full baths and 3 half baths in this custom-built Arts and Crafts-style home. Kudos to builder Trina Summins with Yorkshire Properties for crafting it to EarthCraft standards and handicapped accessible, with features such as wide doorways and an elevator. I also appreciate the contrast of the paneled library, coffered ceilings, and paneled stairwell mixing nicely with the white and creams in the crown molding, judges paneling and walls.

It’s got character – now it just needs a buyer.
