Wouldn’t you love to explore Madison, Georgia, like a true design insider? Jimmy Stanton, owner of popular Atlanta shop Stanton Home Furnishings and subject of a special double feature in our May issue (which you can read here at AtlantaHomesMag.com), has given us the inside scoop on all the things you can do while in town for this Friday and Saturday’s Madison in May Spring Tour of Homes, which will also feature the home of Boxwoods Gardens & Gifts proprietors Dan Belman and Randy Korando. Find out why Atlanta design giants love to get away to the serenity of this fabled Southern town. We encourage you to stay a night at a charming inn—or better still, at the home of a good friend—to get the full experience, but even a day’s excursion is an opportunity for many lovely adventures to unfold. Per Stanton himself: “There are so many wonderful things to see and experience in Madison; here is a list of my favorites. . . . Most are within walking distance from the downtown square.”

BRUSSELS, BELGIUM  | OCTOBER 13 – 18, 2011

THURSDAY, OCTOBER 13, 2011

5:55 PM Depart Atlanta on Delta Airlines Flight 80 in economy class. Nonstop service to Brussels, Belgium. Dinner and breakfast served on board.

FRIDAY, OCTOBER 14, 2011

8:15 AM. Arrive at Brussels Zaventem International Airport. Meet your professional, English-speaking guide and continue on an orientation tour of Brussels.

The orientation tour includes a visit on foot to the Grand Place and its Corporation Houses. The Grand Place is Brussels’ top tourist attraction because of the Gothic magnificence of Brussels’ Town Hall and the Baroque exuberance of the late seventeenth-century guildhouses surrounding the square.

Traveling along by bus, you will discover the Royal Square, the Sablon area, the Palace of Justice, the Royal Palace of Brussels (the King’s work palace), the European Union Buildings, the Atomium (one of the symbols of Belgium, a remnant of the 1958 World exposition in Brussels), the Chinese Pavillion, the Japanese Tower, the Royal Palace of Laeken (residence of the King), several religious buildings such as the Saint Michael and Saint Gudula Cathedrals, the Jubilee Arch, etc.

This morning tour will terminate at approximately 12 NOON at the Hotel The Dominican.

Check-in. Afternoon at leisure.

About The Dominican ****

The Dominican is a deluxe design hotel, poised to become a destination for elegance in the city centre. Its stylish rooms and private courtyard and bustling Grand Lounge combine to ensure indulgent hospitality. In the Grand Lounge, located adjacent to an intimate inner courtyard, breakfast, lunch and dinner are served.

The Lounge Bar is a combination of contemporary café and stylish lounge, making this the perfect destination for a relaxing break. A delectable selection of food and drinks are available to enjoy at any moment of the day.

For a relaxing experience or an energy boost you can visit the health club with gym, sauna, steam bath and massage.

Stay and experience one of the 150 stylishly designed deluxe rooms, executive rooms or one of The Dominican’s 3 exclusive suites. All rooms are equipped with all modern amenities. WI-FI (complimentary), safe, mini-bar, video on demand,  flat screen TV, room service, ironing facilities. The bathrooms are relaxing areas with rain shower or bath, hairdryer and toiletries.

Award winning architects have created an eclectic mix of design in both the interior and exterior –resulting in an array of new styles and experiences. High ceilings and cloisters incorporated into the design of the hotel are reminiscent of the Dominican abbey located here in the 15th century. Sweeping archways and the retained façade are just some of the reminders of the former glory of this city’s central address.

The result is dramatic intimacy, most apparent in the hotel’s public spaces. The restaurant and bar, as well as the private meeting rooms, boast soaring ceilings and attention to detail.Rue Léopold 9, 1000 Brussels, Belgium, Tel: +32 2 203 0808, www.carlton.nl/dominican

6 PM. Gather in the bar for a welcome drink (1 drink per person included in package price).

6:30 PM. Enjoy dinner in the hotel’s Grand Lounge, overlooking the courtyard. (A three-course dinner, excluding drinks, is included in the package price.)

Walking tour which will lead you through the home decoration stores and where you can observe the beautiful furniture of Brussels in different buildings

1 PM. Lunch in restaurant BelgaQueen

Two-course lunch, excluding drinks

Antoine Pinto’s desire to create getaway spaces that offer a gastronomic trip throughout Belgium is the foundation of the Belga Queen brasserie adventure.
In a landmark building dating from the 18th century (previously housing the Hôtel de la Poste and then the Crédit du Nord bank) Antoine Pinto created an establishment breaking away from the traditional brasserie, elbow-to-elbow style. Contemporary architecture and gastronomy meet each other in an amazing way.

At Belga Queen the Belgian cuisine is adapted to today’s taste, lightened and given a very national touch through the addition of beer to numerous dishes. Original, high-quality products are chosen with care from Belgian artisans who still have respect for the soil. The wines come from Belgian producers and the Ponti coffee is from a selection of ‘pure Arabica’ coffee beans from various continents and roasted locally. All these characteristics make the brasserie Belga Queen the ambassador of “made in Belgium”. A brasserie where, for a meal shared with friends and family, all your senses are stimulated: taste, touch, hearing, sight and smell. Restaurant Belga Queen, Rue Fossé aux Loups 32, 1000 Brussels, Tel: +32 2217 2187, www.belgaqueen.be

Afternoon and evening free for independent activities.

SUNDAY, OCTOBER 16, 2011

A sumptuous buffet breakfast is available in the Grand Lounge of the hotel.

9 AM. Meet in the hotel lobby for your trip to Antwerp.

Antwerp awaits you!

After a short one-hour drive, we reach Antwerp, the “place to be” for fashion. The city is home to many fashion designers and even has its own Fashion Museum (since 2002).

And of course, Antwerp is known for Rubens, one of Europe’s most famous painters who lived here during the first part of the 17th century. There’s even a statue of him here.

Upon arrival in Antwerp, your first stop is the Modemuseum (Fashion Museum) for a guided tour (duration 1 hour), followed by a ‘fashion walk’ (1.5 hours walking tour) in the neighborhoods surrounding the museum. Enjoy your guide’s talk about the most important fashion designers in Antwerp.

Then, continue to the private home of Mrs. Germaine Remmers. Her residence is a beautiful five-story historic home in the heart of the city, and houses a nice contemporary art collection. Mrs. Remmers will host a buffet lunch consisting of Belgian specialties, including drinks.

After lunch, enjoy free time in the Kloosterstraat, where you will find more than 70 antique- and home-decoration shops, before returning to Brussels late in the afternoon.

Dinner and rest of evening on your own.

MONDAY, OCTOBER 17, 2011

A sumptuous buffet breakfast is available in the Grand Lounge

10AM -12.30PM Chocolate workshop at a real family managed chocolate manufacturer in the centre of Brussels. Duration: 2 hours, tasting included.

12.30 PM-2 PM. Lunch on Own

2PM-5PM. Afternoon drive to Gravenwezel to visit the castle of Axel Vervoordt, regarded as one of the most original collectors and dealers of our time

7PM Transfer to the restaurant

7.30PM Farewell dinner in Restaurant Cospaia (3-course dinner, excluding drinks)

Brussels, as European Gastronomic Capital, has what is it entitled to: COSPAIA, a bar-restaurant of international stature. The concept is unique and mysterious.

For Cospaia Jan Tindemans united a passionate designer with a top-chef in this exclusive location on the fabled Boulevard de la Toison d’Or.

The myth starts immediately with the location of Cospaia on the Boulevard de la Toison d’Or. Many habitants and visitors of Brussels will surely remember some of the famous eateries that used to occupy this location. The entire neighborhood breathes luxury and coziness.

Exclusive boutiques and first class hotels are in the immediate vicinity, as well as Brussels’ financial heart, the embassies and the European quarter—all within walking distance. It is a dream location for a ‘new style’ restaurant with international ambition. Cospaia will easily fit in that exclusive list of addresses next to Café Costes in Paris, Bank in London, Vau in Berlin and Arts in Barcelona.

Hello Travelers, it’s the Traveling Designer here with a fun idea for some holiday shopping. Each year, I take a girls’ trip during the holiday season with my mom and sister-in-law to do a little Christmas shopping and a lot of girl bonding. Last year our destination of choice was Atlanta, Georgia.

If you want to load up your girlfriends and recreate this fun trip, here’s all you need to know for the perfect weekend in Atlanta.

Buckhead, a suburb of Atlanta, has quaint shopping, great restaurants and gorgeous sites. We made our home base the Ritz Carlton Buckhead. It’s right across the street from two great malls and walking distance from tasty dining.

After checking in but before you head out of the hotel, have a drink in the cozy Ritz bar complete with a real fireplace and holiday tunes! It is a bustling place with a great wine list and ideal for people watching at happy hour!

When ready to head out for dinner, Craft, the famous New York eatery by Chef Tom Colicchio, has a location in Buckhead attached to the gorgeous Mansion on Peachtree hotel and walking distance from the Ritz. The atmosphere is chic and the food is delicious. Try the roasted farm chicken or braised short ribs and the Yukon gold puree. And Tom even makes Brussels sprouts taste great!

For some high-end shopping after dinner, just across the street from the Ritz is the Phipps Plaza mall with great stores like Saks Fifth Avenue, Tory Burch, Tiffany and Co. and Gucci. I especially like the boutique Jeffrey where I bought some great vintage Chanel earrings.

And when you are tired of shopping for the night, head up to the top floor of the Phipps Plaza and catch one of the holiday season’s best movies at the AMC 14 theatre. Last year, we saw the “Blind Side,” a definite tear-jerker for our girls’ group and there are some promising chic-flicks out this season that will be perfect for your trip.

On Day 2 of your trip, you can head over to the annual Christmas House, a holiday designer house sponsored by Atlanta Homes and Lifestyles. The Christmas House is always full of designs from some of the area’s (and the nation’s) hottest designers. You can not only get great design ideas here, but also see wonderful tips for your holiday decor. And this year Christmas House is two high-rise residences at the Mansion on Peachtree, so you couldn’t be closer to it while staying in Buckhead.

Following the showhouse, it’s time for lunch, and no trip to Atlanta is complete without lunch or dinner at Miller Union. I prefer lunch here but save a little room because their homemade ice cream sandwiches are one of the best desserts anywhere.

If something more Provencal is your idea of a good lunch, Anis is a long-time Atlanta favorite. It’ll hit the spot if you’re in the mood for casual French cuisine in a relaxed atmosphere. It’s perfect for lazy day lunches shared with girl friends while sipping rosé.

For a little more afternoon shopping, you can hit the Lenox Square mall or some of the many quaint shops in the Buckhead area. Lenox Square has a great selection of stores including Neiman Marcus, Burberry, Kate Spade, Anthropologie and Louis Vuitton.

If the mall isn’t what you are looking for, Atlanta’s shopping scene has exploded in the past year, especially on the West side. The trade only R. Hughes showroom is breathtaking and offers many new exclusive lines to Atlanta. Nearby, Redefined Home Boutique is a welcomed addition to the West side as well. Austin Hill Art on Peachtree has a great selection of emerging and established artists.

Other hot art spots in Buckhead include Pryor Fine Art, formerly the Bennett Street Gallery and home to one of my favorite artists, Lisa Lala.

If you are an interior designer, the Atlanta Decorative Arts Center (ADAC), the trade-only interior design center, has a plethora of gorgeous furnishings and decor that you won’t want to miss! There are some great new additions to ADAC recently, as well as several renovated showrooms. The Paul + Raulet showroom is a must-see for the Cecil Beaton-designed fabrics and Andrew Martin furniture. And the newly revamped Donghia showroom showcases the best of Angelo Donghia’s legacy for today’s lifestyles.

I hear there are also some great new shops on East Andrews. If you head over there check out Vintage, Scout, Bee and Anthony | Wolfe. All are new and you can walk to each one.

And just around the corner from these spots is one of my favorite shops, Pieces Inc., owned by the stylish Lee Kleinhelter.

So, there you have it! With just 48 hours in the quaint area of Buckhead, you can mark lots of people off your shopping list, buy a few goodies for yourself and have fun with your girlfriends doing it.

I hope you’ll check out some of these Atlanta hot spots on your next trip. Now I’m off on this year’s seasonal shopping trip with the girls. Until we meet again, happy travels and happy holidays. I’ll see you for some amazing trips after the New Year. Cheers!

Goodbye, Summer

Although I’m counting down the days to cooler weather, I’m also a bit sad that summer is winding down. (The first official day of fall is September 22.) I’ve had some great memories this sunny season, like my trips to New York City and Miami. Locally, I’ll remember trekking up Stone Mountain, picnics at Piedmont Park, evenings spent cheering at Turner Field, and of course trying to stay cool at Lake Lanier.

What will you remember most about this summer? How do you plan on spending summer’s final days?

Nikki Beach in Miami

For so many Atlantans, the Gulf Coast is a second home. Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles has particularly close ties there, because so many of our readers keep vacation homes along its pristine Northwest Florida beaches. Likewise, our favorite designers regularly shuffle between our capital city and Florida’s beautiful 30A to decorate breathtaking beach homes for discriminating clients. So it’s natural that we’d be worried about the aftermath of the tragic Deepwater Horizon oil spill and its effects on one of our favorite destinations. Thankfully, in the wake of these unfortunate circumstances, there is still good news to be told. I attended a media briefing at Buckhead’s Bistro Niko last Thursday, hosted by communication execs from the Beaches of South Walton, to catch up on the many great ways that the local industry is weathering this unseemly storm. For one, the local tourism industry is accommodating the rapidly changing situation by maintaining flexible rental and reservation schedules. Where rental companies used to require seven days’ commitment, they are now allowing as few as three. Better still, you can click here to get a custom accommodations schedule and vacation planner.

Even in the wake of environmental uncertainty, the Beaches of South Walton remain gorgeous today—and for the forseeable future. They’re known for being the nation’s cleanest, after all. As the only destination in the country to have 26 continuous miles of certified Blue Wave beaches, they’ve passed 65 rigorous tests administered by the Clean Beaches Council—ensuring that they remain clean, well-managed and environmentally protected. The oil cleanup and impact-prevention efforts—including building 3-foot-high sand berms designed to keep any impending tar balls at bay—are led by a vigilant team of workers who, during the negligible number of impacts, have combed the areas clean overnight. The entire portfolio of 15 beaches—all boasting crystal clear waters and sugar white sand—are still open for enjoyment, so you can still partake in the joys of summertime. Visit the Beaches of South Walton blog (a very cool initiative!) for daily updates on the status of the beaches and the cleanup efforts. Here are a few things to enjoy right now:

  • Attend the Le Grand Cirque performances at Grand Boulevard in Sandestin, continuing through August 15
  • Ride horses and hike at Point Washington State Forest, one of Florida’s most beautiful protected areas
  • Rent bikes and tour scenic highway 30A
  • Dine at Table 5 or any of the many exceptional restaurants that have opened in the past year, like Restaurant Paradis, La Cocina and La Botana
  • Check out Eden State Gardens’ recent transformation

Look forward to a number of “Autumn Tides” activities in the fall (and even more so as the unfortunate Deepwater Horizon oil spill becomes a fading memory):

  • An evening Art Expo at the Village of Baytowne Wharf in Sandestin, featuring artwork from the Southeast’s premier galleries, September 3-5
  • The Farewell to Summer concert at Grand Park in Sandestin on September 5, featuring entertainer and singer David Seering
  • An “Inspirational Weekend,” held September 8-10, along scenic 30A highway and in the community of Alys Beach, where guests can enjoy yoga as well as food and artwork local to the communities of the Beaches of South Walton
  • “A Box of Grace” by the official folk life production group of Walton County, Grit & Grace, September 9-12
  • The Santa Rosa Beach Centennial Celebration at the Gulf Place Amphitheatre, September 10-12. Enjoy the entertainment, artists and vendors all celebrating the community’s 100-year anniversary
  • The Seaside Neighborhood School’s presentation of Via Colori 2010, an Italian-style art festival hosting local and visiting artists who will paint squares on the streets of Sandestin in a variety of styles on September 18
  • The 2010 Autumn Playwright Festival that each year recognizes the work of a distinguished playwright. This year, it celebrates the work of David Mamet throughout the month of October
  • The Back to Nature festival, which explores the host of natural attractions the Beaches of South Walton has to offer, October 15-17
  • Live entertainment and sampling more than 100 specialty beers on display at the Baytowne Wharf Beer Festival in Sandestin, October 23
  • The 20th annual Seeing Red Wine Festival in Seaside, November 4-7
  • The Flutterby Festival celebrating the arts, children and the colorful migration of Monarch butterflies through the Beaches of South Walton in Rosemary Beach, November 13-14
